Does Oriel Numeracy Count Towards Your Rank?

No. Your rank is determined by your SJT score alone. The numeracy test is reported separately, out of 10, and is used only to separate candidates whose SJT scores are tied.

That is the short answer, and it is worth sitting with for a moment, because most candidates revise as though the two tests carry equal weight. They do not.

What the handbook actually says

The applicant handbook is unambiguous on this point: your SJT total score determines your ranking. Numeracy is reported as a raw score and does not contribute to that total.

Where numeracy does matter is in the tie-break. If two candidates finish on the same SJT score, a defined sequence separates them — and numeracy sits at the very bottom of it:

So should you ignore numeracy?

No — and this is where people overcorrect.

You still have to sit it, and a poor numeracy score is a poor numeracy score. If you are genuinely on the boundary, it can decide your placement. It is also a short test with a narrow, well-defined scope, which makes it one of the cheapest marks available to you.

The point is proportion. If you are spending half your preparation time on numeracy, you are optimising the tie-break at the expense of the thing that actually sets your rank.

What this changes in practice

Practise numeracy to competence, then stop. The scope is narrow and closed — doses and dose regimens, unit conversions, concentrations, dilutions, using provided formulae, and quantities to supply. The full in-scope and out-of-scope lists are here. Once you can do those reliably under time pressure, more repetition is not buying you rank.

Spend the recovered time on the SJT, weighted towards the tie-break order. Person-Centred Care is the first attribute consulted after trial items. If two candidates are level, that is what separates them. It is also, in our experience, the attribute candidates prepare least deliberately, because it feels like the obvious one.

Do not treat a strong numeracy score as insurance. It is not. It is the last thing anyone looks at.

A note on where this goes wrong

Much of the Oriel advice online treats the two components as a combined score, or is silent on the distinction. Some of it is simply carried over from GPhC registration assessment guidance, where calculations are a scored paper in their own right. Oriel is a different exam with a different structure, and conflating the two costs candidates preparation time they do not have.

If you take one thing from this: the SJT sets your rank, and numeracy breaks ties. Revise accordingly.
